Beneficiaries Programme

The Beneficiaries Programme is at the heart of our work, providing direct financial support to freelance newsgatherers and their families in crisis.

We give approximately 90 grants a year to beneficiaries in more than 60 countries around the world.  Each grant is tailored to the specific needs of the applicant and their situation.  An applicant may need financial help because of death, injury, imprisonment, kidnapping or threat or because they're in hiding or exile as a result of their work.

Our aim is to help beneficiaries recover from their critical situation and, where possible, resume work. A grant should enable a freelancer and/or their family to move forward with their lives but it may also be for basic subsistence.

The Trust works with a wide network of international and local partners.  These partnerships enable us to help freelancers in countries where it is difficult to operate and to provide additional support with cases that require specialist knowledge and expertise.
