The Rory Peck Awards is an international competition, the only showcase in the world to recognise the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in TV newsgathering and current affairs worldwide. The Awards ceremony is a moving celebration which honours their skill, initiative and, above all, their courage. For freelancers in regions where it is difficult to operate, this competition recognises the value of their work, giving them the opportunity to show the world what is happening in their countries.

The Rory Peck Awards benefit from a joint effort by the international newsgathering industry and are produced with support from Aljazeera English, AP Television News, BBC News, Autoscript Ltd, BSkyB, CBC, CNN, Channel 4 TV, Film &TV Services, GlobeCast, ITN, ITV News, NBC News, Neon Broadcast Services, Reuters TV and SKY News.

There are three Awards:

  • The Rory Peck Award for News

This award honours freelance coverage of on-the-day news, where the focus is on the immediacy of the story

  • The Rory Peck Award for Features

This Award honours freelance news features: in-depth pieces which look beyond the immediacy of a news story

This award honours freelance news footage which raises humanitarian issues and has had an impact internationally or contributed to a change in perception or policy

  • The Martin Adler Prize, sponsored by Atex

The Martin Adler Prize honours a freelancer who has told, or played a vital part in telling a significant news story. The Prize is intended to raise awareness of the value of the recipient’s work and help them to progress their career. The recipient may be a freelance cameraman or camerawoman, or the person who they have depended upon in the field; for example, a fixer, driver or freelance local reporter.

The Martin Adler Prize is given at the discretion of the Trustees of The Rory Peck Trust.

The Rory Peck Awards is the main fund-raiser for The Rory Peck Trust, the charity which exists to support freelance newsgatherers and their families worldwide in times of need and to promote their welfare and safety.
